Margherita Cesaretti (1982) lives and works in Italy. She has a degree in painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and studied photography at the Fondazione Studio Marangoni.

Anatomical museums were a great development of the 1800’s to help in the studies of medicine. What is more they were established for purely scientific purposes, the wax statues kept in them – representations of bodies dissected step by step to show muscles, bones, organs – also showed respect for that era’s elegance of aesthetic representation.

In her ‘Waxworks’, Margherita Cesaretti builds a collection of modern anatomies, scannings of human figures from the cutaneous surfaces to more internal layers. The subjects are ordinary people, extrapolated from real life and brought into a game of representation that seems to freeze their very existence. The posture is of necessity classic and the figures appear as if they are held inside museum cases.

Despite the hyper-realism of the images, the portrayed bodies seem anything but real and, in the same way, distant from didactic illustrations: through the transparency of the flesh, they seem rather to call to mind the essential corporeal nature of human life.
